This year, the Center for Quantitative Reasoning (CQR) made its debut as a part of the many learning centers Morristown Beard School offers its students to support their learning needs. Located in Math Science Center 103 and run by Ms. Rose Costanzo, the CQR has already seen over 200 students in the first quarter alone.
The CQR joins the Center for Academic Writing (CAW), Center for Innovation and Design (CID) and Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). The success of previous centers for learning were a catalyst for the introduction of a center specifically designed for math.
Costanzo said that she hopes that the CQR can be a place where students can feel comfortable coming to for extra help when they are struggling or for a bit more of a challenge. She stressed the importance of collaborative learning and learning to work through struggle as core tenants of the center. The space also boasts more low stakes activities such as the riddle of the week to encourage students to feel comfortable stopping by and thinking outside the box.
To furnish the CQR, the MBS Green Team had the idea to repurpose the plexiglass that had been leftover from COVID-19 to do math on as it has similar properties to a white board. Some of the plexiglass is currently on the walls of the CQR and are often covered in math equations.
The CQR is open from 7:30am to 3:30pm with the exception of the flex block and the last period of the day. All are encouraged to stop by and visit.
