We all have our favorite TV shows, and it feels great to have them recognized. This is exactly what the Emmys are for. This year, the 76th Emmys award show, hosted by the hilarious father-son duo of Eugene and Dan Levy, was held on September 15th at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Due to delays from the 2023 writers and actors strikes, it was the second Emmy Award ceremony held this year.
This year, Shogun (FX) won the award for Best Drama Series and set an all-time high record for most Emmys earned in one year: 18, beating a 16-year-old record set by John Adams in 2008, an HBO miniseries. Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor in Drama, while Anna Sawai won Best Actress.
All of the nominees for Best Drama series were from streaming services. In addition to the eventual winner Shogun, nominees for Best Drama Series were: The Morning Show (Apple TV+), The Crown (Netflix), The Gilded Age (HBO), 3 Body Problem (Netflix), Slow Horses (Apple TV+), Fallout (Prime Video), and Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Prime Video).
Prior to the ceremony itself, The Bear (FX), with it’s 23 nominations, set a record for most nominations for a comedy series in the history of the awards. While the show didn’t pick up the award for Best Comedy Series, it win a record-setting 11 Emmy Awards, the most in a single year for a comedy series. Hacks (HBO/Max) ended up winning Best Comedy.
Netflix’s limited series Baby Reindeer, won multiple awards in the limited series categories, and its stars, Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning, won Best Actor and Actress in a Limited Series respectively.
The Traitors (Peacock), hosted by actor Alan Cumming (The Good Wife) won best in reality competition, a category which RuPaul’s Drag Race (MTV) had won for the past eight years. Cumming went onto win Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program.
Another notable win was Academy Award winner Jodi Foster with her first-ever Emmy this year for her role as an Alaskan police chief in True Detective: Night Country (HBO/Max).
As far fashion goes, many stars wore lighter-colored, layered neutrals, and many people wore sheer, with either mesh fabric or patterns removed from the fabric. The Emmys this year proved very interesting, with many new records being set and many great shows being honored.
