The beginning of a new school year introduces an excited, anxious, and anticipatory wave into the halls of MBS. The transition from middle school to high school is perhaps one of the main events in freshmen students’ lives, involving new experiences, challenges, and changes.
Some freshmen feel overwhelmed and stressed with the adjustment of middle school to high school. Emily Reape ‘28 said, “freshman year is fun so far, but definitely harder than middle school.” Whether it’s the heavy workload or scrambling to find your next class, high school certainly has its challenges. Yet, there is a wider variety of activities students can participate in such as sports, clubs, and other personal interests than what they may have had access to in middle school.
New social dynamics may come across as difficult for some students, especially while trying to find their niche among peers. Even places like the cafeteria can seem intimidating. Building friendships is a vital part of the high school experience.
However, nervousness soon gives way to excitement as students look forward to beginning the next chapter of their lives. Blake Tiger ‘28 said, “high school is about trying new things and creating a path for yourself. Morristown Beard lets you explore and experience new possibilities.” High school is the time for exploration and self-discovery, trying new things, and constructing a path for yourself.
The switch from middle to high school presents new opportunities but also obstacles for freshmen. While navigating this change, they encounter increased academic rigor and a wider range of extracurricular activities. By embracing these new possibilities and maintaining a positive perspective, ninth graders can make the most of their high school years, create a strong foundation for future ambitions, and leave a lasting legacy.
