On Sunday morning, January 11, 2026, masked ICE agents arrived in unmarked SUVs near Speedwell Avenue in Morristown. The raid took place at everyday locations such as a Sunoco gas station and Pan Casero Bakery, according to Morristown Green. Juan Daniel Mendoza, a 17-year-old Morristown High School senior, was detained while doing laundry, though on Jan. 15 he was released by a federal judge who ruled his due process rights had been violated as reported by Morristown Green.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, often referred to as ICE, was formed in 2003 under the Department of Homeland Security following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Their official role was to enforce customs and immigration laws, however their recent surge in enforcement actions under the current federal administration has been met with criticism.
While ICE has been present all over the country, the northern Jersey community was heavily impacted by the recent Morristown raid, where 11 men in total were detained. The Morristown police had not been notified nor did they assist ICE, following New Jersey Attorney General guidelines. The aftermath of this raid was a “climate of terror” as described by the local Morris County Interfaith Clergy. When asked about the legality of the raids, Mr. Maher, teacher of Constitutional Law, pointed to the Fifth Amendment, stating “It exists to restrain government power by requiring justification, notice, and a lawful process before punishment or detention occurs.” Mr. Maher believes such Amendments (notably the Fourth and Fifth) “charge our country to ‘get it right’” and he has “faith in the American public to do so.“
The event in Morristown follows a national trend of ICE raids that have spanned from Minnesota to New Jersey. Morristown isn’t alone. In early 2026, thousands were arrested in Minnesota in what was known as “Operation Metro Surge” as reported by CBS News. Rather than just targeting individuals with violent criminal records, there has been a shift toward high-profile raids in public spaces like laundromats and Target stores.
Being in Morristown, both the MHS and MBS community have been affected by ICE’s presence. The detention of Mendoza, a peer, has made the national immigration debate personal for many local students according to CBS News. Furthermore, many hearts have been touched by the tragic story of a 6-year-old girl left alone after her father was detained while getting food.
Looking forward, many questions still remain, such as whether or not these raids will lead to stricter state laws to protect residents. For now, tension grows between the federal enforcement and the Morristown community’s value of inclusion.
